Believe it or not, there are lots of people who have already done the same thing. School Bus to RV conversions are collectively called "Skoolies" around the Internet. I liked the name, but wanted to personalize the idea a bit, so I decided to call ours a Skewly ("Kewl" is computer-nerd speak for "Cool"). We "borrowed" ideas from lots of people who have already done this and came up with a few ideas of our own to make this project happen.

The main reason I wanted to do this little project was to have a really cool hotel room on wheels that would allow us to travel across the US, Canada and Mexico in style (and maybe Central/South America if I get the nerve) for less than $100K for a new RV or $40K for a very used RV.

We spent less than half the cost of a used Class C (class C RVs are those smaller RVs that are built on a van chassis) and have a unique RV that is made exactly to our specifications with all new stuff. Okay, the bus and engine aren't new, but the insides are all new. Plus, this thing has much more power than a similarly-sized Class C RV (the bus is 31 feet long) and can handle much rougher terrain.

Now that I'm finished with Skewly 1.0, I'm working on how I can improve on the original and maybe even add some green or alternative fuel technologies. I think I am going to convert the engine to run 100% Biodiesel or maybe even WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil) or UCO (Used Cooking Oil). I'm also considering adding a significant number of solar panels to the roof to charge both the engine batteries and the inverter bank batteries and provide additional power.

I am probably also going to remove most of the sheet metal below the bus floor and add storage bins with lockable doors like you see under many tour busses.
